Data Distribution vs Box Plot Explorer

📊 Data Distribution & Box Plot Aligner

Continuous Grouped Data vs. Box-and-Whisker Plot Teaching Demo

Presets:
Total Freq (N) 77 Observations
Min Data 152 Lowest mark
Lower Quartile (Q₁) 157.0 25th Percentile
Median (Q₂ / M) 162.0 50th Percentile
Upper Quartile (Q₃) 172.0 75th Percentile
Max Data 187 Highest mark
IQR (Q₃ - Q₁) 15.0 Middle 50% spread
Mean (x̄) 164.3 Arithmetic average
Distribution Shape: Positively Skewed (Right-skewed) — Mean (164.3) > Median (162.0). The long tail extends to the right; the upper whisker and box segment are elongated.

📖 Teaching Notes & Visual Alignment Concept ▼

1. Exact Vertical Alignment

Because the histogram bars and box plot share the exact same horizontal coordinate range (149.5 to 189.5), students can look straight down from any bar to find its corresponding quartile position.

2. Quartile Meaning (25% / 50% / 75%)

The dashed vertical lines partition the cumulative data into 4 equal counts. Notice how high frequencies in lower classes pull Q1 and Q2 to the left, creating a long right whisker.

3. Skewness Intuition

Right-skewed: Mean > Median, (Q3 - Q2) > (Q2 - Q1).
Left-skewed: Mean < Median, (Q2 - Q1) > (Q3 - Q2).
Symmetrical: Mean ≈ Median, balanced whiskers.
